I had an older brother and sister 12 and 15 years my senior respectively, parents who were happy together, and my aunt and cousins lived one street over. I had a lot of attention growing up being the baby and all, but my main source of affection came from my Dad. To define our relationship like that would misconstrue it; we were simpatico. Our father-daughter relationship was more like a typical father-son relationship. My mom hated seafood so we would often go get fish together and make fun of people at work, school, etc. My dad is tremendously funny and a phenomenal story teller. I think I always had a high bar when it came to dating because my dad really had it all; he was tall, dark, and handsome, educated, successful, ethical, funny, athletic, and handy. He was the standard.

My sweet Christian child who had withstood peer pressure in high school had not had many dates because she would not put out. It was a great answer to prayer because the market had dropped badly and the amount of money in her college fund was significantly less. I knew she would party at college, but she had worked during high school and had paid for her own dance lessons for big band music. She had shown the ability to watch out for herself. She had chosen to study French.
I did not worry too much while she was gone, because she kept in touch. During her sophomore year there were two hurricanes and she got scared. She had met him at one of the family oriented dance clubs. Originally he had told her he was French, and they enjoyed chats in that language beyond what others at her college could do.

When we wrote our book, “Love for Grown-ups,” we interviewed countless women who had faced just this situation.

One Garter Bride told us, “I didn’t like the way my daughter’s boyfriend treated her and I told her so. Of course, she decided to marry him anyway. I almost tripped him as he walked down the aisle, but one of my friends told me to stop bad-mouthing him, that all it was doing was making my daughter miserable, so I gave in and gave her my blessing. One of the many true things about life is that things change as time goes on.
